Protectors Of The Nest

The DC Universe is populated by many superheroes. Amongst them are the Birds Of Prey, an all-female team composed of characters such as Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Lance), and Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). Originally plotted by Chuck Dixon, the series has been in the hands of several other writers, the most notable of which is Gail Simone, and has undergone changes to coincide with the handover to different creative influences.

During the early days of the team’s formation, Barbara and Dinah were the only members, with the former — going by the name of Oracle after being paralysed by supervillain the Joker — acting as the behind-the-scenes assistor whilst her physically able counterpart took a direct approach.

In 2020, the team featured in their own film, which was titled Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn). Although the plot focuses predominantly on the eponymous Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie), one of the most popular characters in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), she is joined by Helena Bertinelli (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Together, they endeavour to protect a young thief called Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), who is responsible for stealing a valuable diamond sought by the crime boss Roman Sionis / Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
