The Druun Have Returned

Released in 2021 (both theatrically and on the Disney+ streaming service), Raya And The Last Dragon is a computer-animated feature film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film was joint directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, with Paul Briggs and John Ripa acting as co-directors.

Reflecting its south-east Asian influences, the film brings together a cast of predominantly Asian American voice actors, including Kelly Marie Tran (Raya), Awkwafina (Sisu, the eponymous dragon), Izaac Wang (Boun), Gemma Chan (Namaari), Daniel Dae Kim (Chief Benja), Benedict Wong (Tong), Sandra Oh (Virana), Thalia Tran (Little Noi), Lucille Soong (Dang Hu), and Alan Tudyk (Tuk Tuk).

Raya And The Last Dragon also features a musical score by critically acclaimed composer James Newton Howard, who is best known for his work on films such as The Dark Knight and King Kong.

Written by Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim, the film is based in the fictional land of Kumandra, a place once devastated by evil spirits known as the Druun. To put an end to these malevolent entities, the last of the dragons, Sisu, channelled her magic into a gem and banished them. The surviving populace divided into tribes (Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail), each situated alongside a river shaped like a dragon.

Centuries later, the daughter of Chief Benja of the Heart tribe, Raya, is the guardian of the sacred gem. Desiring peace, Chief Benja brings the five tribes together for a feast, where Raya befriends the daughter of Chief Virana, Namaari. Raya then reveals the location of the gem but is betrayed, resulting in the relic being shattered and the Druun returning.

Surviving the attack, Raya seeks to find the last dragon and recover the missing pieces of the gem to banish the Druun once more.
