What Is Cobra Kai?

Based on the popular 1984 martial-arts flick Karate Kid by director Robert Mark Kamen, Cobra Kai is a comedy streaming show set thirty-four years after the events of the film. Actors Ralph Macchio and William Zabka return to their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence.

The series launched in 2018 on the YouTube Red platform, but it was picked up by Netflix after being cancelled following the conclusion of the second season. Unlike the original Karate Kid film, Cobra Kai puts Johnny Lawrence in the spotlight, showing his life after his defeat in the All-Valley Karate Tournament. Now a fifty-year-old man, Johnny works as a part-time handyman in Reseda, Los Angeles, distanced from the wealthy lifestyle enabled by his abusive stepfather, Sid Weinberg.

Having lost his job, Johnny makes the choice to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo after rescuing his neighbour Miguel Diaz from some bullies. This decision rekindles his long-buried rivalry with Daniel LaRusso, who is now the successful owner of a car dealership chain. (However, Daniel struggles to balance his family life after the death of his karate master, Mr. Miyagi.)

With the opening of Cobra Kai, Johnny finds himself training a group of bullied outcasts, including Aisha, Hawk, and Demetri. Wanting to instil more honour into his students, Johnny attempts to change the philosophy of the dojo, which was traditionally based on ruthlessness during the time of its former owner, John Kreese.
