The God Of Thunder

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (based on the Norse god of the same name), Thor made his debut in Marvel Comic’s Journey Into Mystery #83 in 1962. He is depicted as a member of the Asgardians, a species of god-like individuals who live on Asgard. The son of Odin and brother of Loki, Thor — also known as the ‘God Of Thunder’ — wields a mighty hammer called Mjolnir.

In 2011, the character (played by actor Chris Hemsworth) was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in his own eponymous feature film. This was the character’s second live-action portrayal, following in the footsteps of The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988), which featured Eric Allan Kramer as Thor.

The first film saw the God Of Thunder stripped of his power and banished to Earth by Odin (Anthony Hopkins) after he reignited an age-old feud between Asgard and Jotunheim. While on Earth, Thor meets a scientist by the name of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and he struggles to repel the Destroyer, which was sent by the scheming Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

The Dark World (2013), the second film in the series, centres around the return of an ancient enemy: Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his army of Dark Elves. Malekith seeks to unleash a weapon known as the Aether on the Nine Realms.

The third instalment, Ragnarok (2017), begins with Thor being told by the fire demon Surtur that Asgard will soon be destroyed in the prophesised Raganarok. Shortly after, Hela (Cate Blanchett) — the first born of Odin — returns to reclaim her throne. Sent away to Sakaar, a planet of junk, Thor must find a way to reclaim his home world.

In addition to the character’s solo films, he has also appeared in various other movies based in the MCU. Some of his notable appearances include Avengers Assemble (2012), Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015), Doctor Strange (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
