The Progenitors Of Nu Metal

A notable pioneer of the nu metal genre, Korn is an American-based band from California. They entered the music scene during the ’80s, their original line-up comprising James ‘Munky’ Shaffer (rhythm guitar), Brian ‘Head’ Welch (lead guitar and backing vocals), Reginal ‘Fieldy’ Arvizu (bass), and David Silveria (drums). At this time, they were known as L.A.P.D.; however, the addition of science student Jonathan Davis (lead vocals and bagpipes) ushered in the birth of Korn. This name incorporated a backwards ‘R’, which was intended to reference the members’ previous employment under the toy retailer Toys R Us.

In 1993, the band debuted their first demo album, Neidermayer's Mind. It had a limited printing — available to record companies and those who filled out a flyer provided at gigs that Korn played with House Of Pain and Biohazard — but critics and the public had negative reactions. Regardless, this demo was the first example of nu metal, introducing sounds that would become recognisable. Their self-titled debut album followed in 1994, with American record producer Ross Robinson giving them the means to record it. Receiving favourable reviews, this album is said to have influenced many other bands, including the likes of Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, and Slipknot. Eventually, during a tour alongside Deftones and Ozzy Osbourne, the album was declared gold, and it would be certified platinum on two separate occasions by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA).

In addition to Korn, they have also released several other albums: Life Is Peachy (1996), Follow The Leader (1998), Issues (1999), Untouchables (2002), Take A Look In The Mirror (2003), See You On The Other Side (2005), an untitled album (2007), Korn III: Remember Who You Are (2010), The Path Of Totality (2011), The Paradigm Shift (2013), The Serenity Of Suffering (2016), The Nothing (2019), and Requiem (2022).
