The Rise Of Punk

Established by Billie Joe Armstrong (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, and harmonica) and Mike Dirnt (backing vocals, bass, and guitars), Green Day is an American rock band that made its debut in 1987. They are collectively recognised as one of the main proponents of punk-rock music in mainstream US culture, and their record sales have totalled more than 75 million.

The band’s original line-up comprised Armstrong, Dirnt, and Tré Cool (drums, percussion, and backing vocals). However, there have been several other members, some of whom are Raj Punjabi (drums and backing vocals), Sean Hughes (bass), and John Kiffmeyer (drums, percussion, and backing vocals). Together, they have created some of the biggest studio albums in music history, each contained song offering something new: 39/Smooth (1990), Kerplunk (1991), Dookie (1994), Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), Warning (2000), American Idiot (2004), 21st Century Breakdown (2009), ¡Uno! (2012), ¡Dos! (2012), ¡Tré! (2012), Revolution Radio (2016), and Father Of All Motherfuckers (2020).

Prior to the band’s rebranding as Green Day, they were known as Sweet Children. It was only after the group signed with Larry Livermore’s label, Lookout! Records, that they changed their name. This was done to avoid confusion with a local band that went by Sweet Baby. Reportedly, the decision behind the new title was influenced by the band’s frequent use of cannabis, and Armstrong himself has said that it is the ‘worst band name in the world’. Regardless, they have found immense commercial success, with fans flocking to see their live tours and to purchase their latest albums.
