The Red Turtle
The Red Turtle is an animated Studio Ghibli film by Michael Dudok de Wit. It follows a man who finds himself stranded on a deserted island, and while trying to escape encounters a red turtle. The relationship that forms between the two will change both their lives forever. I should preface that this is a film without dialogue, and it is so brilliant because of that fact. A lot of what you hear are sounds of the environment which added to the immersion but also add to the feeling of loneliness and isolation. This is also occasionally broken up by the beautiful score by Lauren Perez Del Mar. The island itself does feel like a character, and the story is told through interactions between those characters. I don’t feel I can say anything else without treading into spoilers, but this is an absolutely beautiful and rare film I would recommend checking out to anyone.
