This seminal dance film, created Powell and Pressburger, in which an impresario takes a ballerina under his wing, deftly combines interpretive dance with drama. This acclaimed adaption of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale results in a marked triumph of artistic collaboration and modernity. More than any other film, THE RED SHOES deals with the dangerous, magical process by which art is distilled from preparation and effort.

Number one film of all time? Probably.
The Red Shoes at this time is my favorite film, I never would have guessed a film involving Ballet could become my favorite film but The Red Shoes has proven me very much wrong. The Red Shoes gives intrigue and wonder at this magical Technicolor world that Powell and Pressburger have created, it gives a feeling like watching The Wizard Of Oz being both beautiful and creepy at the same time. The acting is top notch, I can’t fault it, The story is brilliant and keeps you gripped for the nearly two hour and twenty minute run time, the costumes are extraordinary with out a doubt some of the best of all time. Overall a gripping film with great drama and a shock ending that you won’t see coming. The print is also very good if Criterion is out of your price range this is definitely the best option. My highest recommendation!
