No C.G.I Here Gerry Anderson's First Big Budget Live Action Series
When Space 1999 first exploded onto screens in 1975 it was a massive hit, both in the U.K and in other countries around the world. The U.S.A called it the British version of Star Trek, never the less even today it holds up,the care and attention given to the visual effects is still a wonder to watch headed by British effects legend Brian Johnson who had worked on Gerry Andersons previous shows such as Thuinderbirds. Its interesting to note that the first episode "Breakaway" took almost 2 months to film and when completed was almost at a run time of 3 hours and was to be split into a two part episode, investors were so blowen away by 'Breakaway" they stated it was so grand that it should be a big screen movie and not the beginning of a new T.V series, yet it was cut down to 60 minutes and unfortunately the full 3 hour version has to date never been restored. This restoration is incredible bringing a 1975 show into the 21'st Century..but its the DTS 5.1 Surround mix that shines...Barry Grays opening theme explodes across your soundstage with great bass effects and as far as when the moon is blowen out of earth orbit, its impressive to say the least. Its also fitting that you get to rewatch what many fans of the show consider the most haunting hour of Televison ever with an episode that fans say still haunts them all these years later..that being 'Dragons Domain"..its just so creepy..even by todays standards..many countries banned the episode from being showen as they deemed it to insuitable for younger viewers and even a bold warning was given at the beginning of the episode for those who did get to watch it. Space 1999 is a show for all ages at a time when the entire family came together and watched in awe.
