Gold Class Restoration for a Controversial Season of Doctor Who
Season 17 is a Marmite year for Doctor Who- you generally either love it or hate it. With the money drying up and Tom Baker looking for new dimensions to the character, Douglas Adams comes to the show to liven things up further. The result is six stories each with a strong sci fi hook and a certain level of wit- some of it sophisticated, and some of it as subtle as a bull in a china shop. The season is never boring, and contains fan favourite City of Death, Doctor Who's first overseas filmed story, which later formed the basis of the first Dirk Gently novel. Destiny of the Daleks reintroduced Davros to the series, The Creature from the Pit featured two strong female villains, Nightmare of Eden takes a surprising turn when drug smuggling is revealed within the plot, and The Horns of Nimon is a Christmas Panto by way of the myth of Perseus and the Minotaur. The crowning jewel of the set though is the definitive version of Shada- the incomplete season finale that the BBC have been finishing with new versions for 30 years now. This one reunites the remaining original cast to record the lines for the scenes which were never filmed, which are then completed with animation. This was Douglas Adams last script for the program, and its excellent. For those upgrading from DVD, this set includes exclusive commentaries from Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, and Catherine Schell, a new interview with the late Bob Baker (co-creator of K9), new optional effects on Nightmare of Eden, and a brand new feature on the life of the late, great Douglas Adams. A treat. Go on. You'll like it.
